A Winston-Salem-State student sang his way to the top of the 105 Voices of History National Concert, winning a $10,000 scholarship.

Jonathan Figgers, a sophomore music business major from Tallahassee, represented WSSU in the “105 Voices of History HBCU National Concert Choir” performance. He was also the recipient of the scholarship. The event was held Sept. 21, 2012 at the Grand Ole Opry on the Andrew Mellon Stage in Washington, D.C. This year’s concert was a five-year celebration for the organization.

On the last, rehearsal before the concert, students wrote their names and put them in four different boxes, for different regions. On the night of the concert Wintley Phipps, a guest speaker, drew Figgers’ name.

All of the scholarship proceeds were donated by contributors. Wintley Phipps donated $1,000.

The choir is comprised of students from the 105 HBCU’s. Founded in 2008 as a non-profit, 105 Voices of History provides opportunities for Black students.
